## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Agents need a governed way to request app connections during issue
work.
> - The catalog now describes the available providers and setup methods.
> - A request must become a durable, company-scoped intent before an
operator acts on it.
> - This pull request adds that intent runtime across server, agent,
CLI, and shared contracts.
> - The benefit is a safe bridge from agent need to operator-approved
setup.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Refs #11965
This is stack 7 of 11. It depends on stack 6 and replaces another
reviewable part of #11965.
## What Changed
- Add connection intent types, validation, service logic, and routes.
- Add agent runtime tools and CLI support for connection requests.
- Add issue-thread interaction support for connection intents.
- Add runtime, route, adapter, and contract tests.
- Hold the final resolved-continuation row lock through asynchronous
adapter preparation until an actual process spawn, so parking or
reassignment cannot cross that boundary.
- Report Hermes Gateway's first remote run request through the shared
dispatch hook so the resolved-intent lock is released at the true
dispatch boundary.
- Revalidate the addressed user's live non-viewer membership and
connection-management authority for every intent mutation, including
OAuth completion.
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
src/__tests__/tool-access-service.test.ts`
- Result: 176 tests passed.
- `pnpm build`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
src/__tests__/heartbeat-stale-queue-invalidation.test.ts` (32 passed;
includes non-process dispatch lock-release coverage)
- `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server
server/src/__tests__/connection-intents-service.test.ts -t
"addressed-user mutation"` (1 passed)
- `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server
server/src/__tests__/tool-access-service.test.ts -t "binds OAuth
callback completion to the initiating board session"` (1 passed)
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/hermes-paperclip-adapter test --
src/gateway/server/execute.test.ts` (23 passed; includes dispatch-hook
ordering and exactly-once coverage)
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/hermes-paperclip-adapter typecheck`
## Risks
- A malformed intent could create an unusable operator request.
- Validators and company checks reject invalid or cross-company
requests.
- The final continuation gate holds the issue row lock through adapter
preparation until process or remote dispatch; later operator changes use
the normal active-run interruption path.
- The change does not add a database migration.

connection work from #11965 and does not duplicate another planned item.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Adapters inject prompt text that teaches agents how to call the
Paperclip API, including copy-pasteable curl examples
> - Some of those URLs contained brace placeholders like
`/api/issues/{id}/checkout`
> - Agents paste such lines verbatim; the placeholder reaches the server
as `/api/issues/%7Bid%7D` and 404s, and request logs show agents doing
exactly that
> - The acpx engine's API note already avoids this by using
`$PAPERCLIP_TASK_ID`, and its test pins `/api/issues/{id}` out of the
prompt
> - This pull request applies the same standard to the gemini adapter,
the shared prompt template, and the openclaw gateway workflow
> - The benefit is that agents stop burning turns on placeholder 404s
and doc examples stay safe to execute as written
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
No public issue exists for this defect. The description below follows
the bug report template.
**What happened?**
Server request logs show agents issuing `GET /api/issues/%7Bid%7D` — the
literal, percent-encoded text `{id}` — which 404s. The source is adapter
prompt text: the gemini adapter's API note embeds a curl example with
`/api/issues/{id}/checkout` in the URL, the shared agent prompt template
mentions `/api/issues/{issueId}` endpoints, and the harness checkout
notice names `/api/issues/{id}/checkout`. Models copy these strings into
real requests.
**Expected behavior**
URL paths in prompt text must carry environment variables or real ids,
never brace placeholders, in every string an agent might execute
verbatim. Where a placeholder is unavoidable, the prompt must state
explicitly that the literal text must never be sent.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Give an agent the gemini adapter's API access note.
2. Watch it call `curl ...
"$PAPERCLIP_API_URL/api/issues/{id}/checkout"` as written.
3. The server logs `POST /api/issues/%7Bid%7D/checkout 404`.
## What Changed
- gemini-local's API note curl example now uses `$PAPERCLIP_TASK_ID` and
tells the agent to substitute a real issue id when that variable is
absent — the same convention as the acpx engine's API note.
- The shared agent prompt template (`server-utils.ts`) uses
`$PAPERCLIP_TASK_ID` in its interaction-creation and resume-endpoint
mentions, and the harness checkout notice names `POST
/api/issues/$PAPERCLIP_TASK_ID/checkout`.
- openclaw-gateway's endpoint workflow keeps its `{issueId}`
placeholders — they are defined by its "determine issueId" step — but
now states explicitly that the literal text must never be sent in a URL.
- `server-utils.test.ts` pins the new form and adds negative pins that
keep `/api/issues/{id}` and `/api/issues/{issueId}` out of the shared
prompt template, mirroring the existing acpx-engine negative pin.
- The `confirmation:{issueId}:plan:{revisionId}` idempotency-key
template is untouched: it is a value-construction pattern, not a URL.
## Verification
- `npx vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts
packages/adapters/gemini-local packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway` — 152
passed. The single failure (`pre-selects gemini-api-key auth in the
managed HOME for sandbox execution`) is a pre-existing
environment-specific failure on the development machine, unrelated to
prompt text; CI is authoritative for it.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils --filter
@paperclipai/adapter-gemini-local --filter
@paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck`.
## Risks
- Low risk: prompt-text and test changes only; no runtime logic changes.
- Agents that memorized the old example strings keep working — the
routes are unchanged, only the placeholder text in prompts is.
## Model Used
- Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic), model id `claude-fable-5`, extended
thinking enabled, agentic tool use via Claude Code (CLI harness), 200k
context window.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Paperclip runs across the CLI, server, adapters, plugins, CI, and
container images.
> - These surfaces declared different Node.js versions from 20 through
24.
> - A newer `@types/node` major can expose APIs that the supported
runtime does not provide.
> - Node.js 20 is no longer a suitable project baseline, and Node.js 24
is the current LTS line.
> - This pull request sets Node.js 24.11.0 as one repository-wide
baseline, adds a drift check, and gives users actionable startup
guidance when their runtime is too old.
> - The benefit is one clear runtime contract for development, release,
installation, and published packages.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Refs #2734
Refs #11727
Refs #739
## What Changed
- Require Node.js 24.11.0 or newer in all 42 package manifests and
runtime checks.
- Use Node.js 24 in GitHub Actions, Docker images, smoke images, sandbox
setup, portable installs, and esbuild targets.
- Align every direct `@types/node` declaration on `^24.0.0`.
- Prevent Dependabot from opening major `@types/node` upgrades without a
matching runtime decision.
- Add `.nvmrc` and a CI policy check for Node version drift.
- Update ACP version gates, tests, and user documentation for the new
minimum.
- Print a non-blocking warning on CLI and server startup when Node is
unsupported, with remediation through a version manager or the
documented downloaded `install.sh` workflow.
- Deduplicate that warning when `paperclipai run` boots the CLI and
server in the same process.
## Verification
- `node scripts/check-node-version-policy.mjs`
- `node --check scripts/check-node-version-policy.mjs`
- `node --check cli/esbuild.config.mjs`
- `node --check scripts/generate-npm-package-json.mjs`
- `bash -n scripts/install.sh scripts/test-install-sh-docker.sh
scripts/e2e-install-lifecycle.sh`
- Parsed all 42 package manifests and confirmed `engines.node` is
`>=24.11.0`.
- `git diff --check`
- `vitest run
packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-install-command.test.ts` passed with
3 tests.
- `vitest run cli/src/node-version.test.ts` passed with 4 tests.
- Directly exercised the shared warning helper for unsupported-version
messaging and same-process deduplication.
- The focused exe.dev suite could not resolve the locally unbuilt plugin
SDK from this isolated worktree. A full offline workspace install was
also blocked because the package-manager signature verifier requires
registry access. The full suite was not run locally; draft CI performs a
clean install and evaluates the wider impact.
## Risks
- This is a breaking runtime change for users, plugins, and deployments
that still use Node.js 20 or 22.
- Published workspace packages will now produce an engine warning or
failure in strict package managers on older Node.js releases.
- Node.js 24 can reveal dependency, native module, Playwright, or agent
CLI compatibility issues in CI.
- The bootstrap installer now installs Node.js 24 when the current
runtime is older than 24.11.0.
- The portable sandbox fallback is pinned to Node.js 24.11.0 and depends
on that upstream tarball remaining available.
- Unsupported runtimes continue booting after a warning, so a later
incompatibility can still fail at its point of use.
- The CLI and server share the warning policy through the published
`@paperclipai/shared` package; packaging checks must keep that subpath
export available.
- This PR does not commit `pnpm-lock.yaml` because repository policy
assigns lockfile generation to CI.
> For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and
discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap
with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap
first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`.
## Model Used
- OpenAI Codex based on GPT-5. The exact deployment ID and context
window are not exposed in this session. Reasoning, repository tools,
shell execution, and GitHub tools were enabled.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - The `openclaw-gateway` adapter wakes a remote agent over a WebSocket
gateway. It sends a wake prompt. That prompt tells the agent which
environment variables to set and which file holds its Paperclip API key.
> - Each agent stores its claimed key in its own JSON file. The adapter
already exposes a `claimedApiKeyPath` config field for this. The field
is documented in `src/index.ts`. It also has an input in the agent
settings UI.
> - `buildWakeText` ignored that field. It hardcoded the shared default
path into the wake prompt text.
> - Every agent therefore read the same key file at wake time. Agents
authenticated as the wrong identity. The first API call failed.
> - This pull request passes `ctx.config.claimedApiKeyPath` into
`buildWakeText`. It uses the existing `resolveClaimedApiKeyPath` helper.
That helper falls back to the documented default.
> - The benefit is that each agent reads its own claimed-key file. Each
agent authenticates as itself.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Fixes#10071Fixes#4976Fixes#3098Fixes#8076
These four open issues report the same defect. Earlier duplicates are
already closed: Refs #2561, Refs #2592, Refs #930.
Related pull requests that address the same root problem (duplicate
search):
- #3396 — same core change, no tests
- #3370 — heavier approach, injects `PAPERCLIP_CLAIMED_API_KEY_PATH`
into the wake env and adds server onboarding defaults
- #5970 — renames the config field to `paperclipApiKeyPath`
- #8072 — same core change, bundled with an unrelated protocol-version
change
- #784 — adds shell quoting and preflight instructions
- #3296 — bundled with an unrelated Claude hello-probe fix
## What Changed
- `packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.ts`
- `buildWakeText` now accepts `claimedApiKeyPath` as a parameter. It no
longer hardcodes the path.
- The `execute` call site passes
`resolveClaimedApiKeyPath(ctx.config.claimedApiKeyPath)`. That helper
returns the documented default
`~/.openclaw/workspace/paperclip-claimed-api-key.json` when the agent
sets no override.
- `resolveClaimedApiKeyPath` is now exported so tests can call it.
- `packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.test.ts` — adds
`resolveClaimedApiKeyPath` cases: a configured value, an empty string, a
whitespace-only string, `undefined`, `null`, and non-string input.
- `packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/vitest.config.ts` (new) —
package-level vitest config. It matches the config used by sibling
adapters such as `opencode-local`.
- `vitest.config.ts` (root) — adds the adapter to the workspace project
list.
- `scripts/run-vitest-stable.mjs` — adds
`@paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway` to `nonServerProjects`.
**Maintainer-added during rebase.** The CI test lanes do not run a bare
`vitest`. They call `run-vitest-stable.mjs`, which invokes vitest with
an explicit `--project` allowlist. Without this entry the CI lanes skip
this package, and the root project-list entry alone has no effect on CI.
## Verification
Run the package suite directly:
```
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway
```
The suite covers `resolveSessionKey`, `buildAgentParams`, and the new
`resolveClaimedApiKeyPath` cases. The first two already existed in this
file but never executed in CI before this change.
Typecheck the package:
```
pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck
```
Behavioural check, which no automated test covers:
1. Set `claimedApiKeyPath` to a per-agent value such as
`~/.openclaw/workspace/paperclip-keys/<agent>.json` in the agent's
gateway adapter settings.
2. Trigger a wake for that agent.
3. Confirm the rendered wake text names that file. It must not name the
shared default.
Maintainer note: this branch was rebased onto current `master` by a
maintainer. The original branch was two months stale. Only two conflicts
occurred, both additive: the import line and the tail of
`execute.test.ts`, and the project list in the root `vitest.config.ts`.
The `execute.ts` change applied without conflict. CI and Greptile re-run
against the rebased head.
## Risks
- Low for existing deployments. `resolveClaimedApiKeyPath` preserves the
default path exactly. Any agent that never set `claimedApiKeyPath`
receives the same wake text as before.
- The behaviour changes only for agents that already set a per-agent
path. Those agents previously received the wrong instruction. They now
receive the correct one.
- No database, schema, or API surface changes.
- CI now runs this package's test file for the first time. That file
includes the pre-existing `resolveSessionKey` and `buildAgentParams`
tests, which were never executed before.
- Five other adapters (`cursor-cloud`, `cursor-local`, `gemini-local`,
`grok-local`, `pi-local`) sit in the root project list but remain absent
from the CI allowlist. This pull request does not change them. That gap
is tracked separately.
## Model Used
- Contributor's change: Anthropic Claude, model ID `claude-opus-4-7`,
approximately 200K context, extended thinking. Used for triage, patch
authoring, and the original description.
- Rebase, the `run-vitest-stable.mjs` entry, and this description:
Anthropic Claude, model ID `claude-opus-5`, tool use enabled. Run by a
Paperclip maintainer.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Governed MCP access spans contracts, runtime enforcement, adapters,
UI surfaces, and operator verification
> - The parity reference PR #9534 is too large for effective automated
or human review
> - The feature therefore needs a linear stack whose individual diffs
stay below the 100-file review limit
> - This pull request is split 5/8 and focuses on remaining adapters,
CLI, plugin examples, and deployment packaging
> - The benefit is a standalone, testable review boundary while
preserving byte-for-byte parity at the top of the stack
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
- Related parity reference: #9534
- Problem: The backend runtime needs packaging, CLI propagation,
worktree provisioning, release manifests, and remaining adapter/plugin
consumers.
- Proposed solution: Adds the remaining runtime/deployment integration
after compile-required contracts and concrete MCP injection moved into
lower server levels.
- Alternatives considered: keeping #9534 as one 403-file review, or
rewriting the feature to manufacture seams; both were rejected in favor
of path extraction plus compile-driven boundary moves.
- Roadmap alignment: this advances the existing governed MCP/tool-access
work already represented by #9534; it does not introduce a separate
roadmap initiative.
- Stack position: base branch is
`pap10341-split/04-server-runtime-wiring`.
- Merge policy: merge bottom-up, in order, only after the complete
eight-PR stack has been reviewed and the top-of-stack parity gate
remains empty.
- Requested review: QA for CLI, packaging, and worktree behavior;
Greptile on every PR.
## What Changed
- Adds the remaining runtime/deployment integration after
compile-required contracts and concrete MCP injection moved into lower
server levels.
- Keeps this PR below 100 changed files and independently typecheckable.
- Preserves the final tree from #9534 when combined with the other seven
stack levels.
## Verification
- `pnpm typecheck`
- Focused CLI Vitest run — 4 files, 49 tests passed
## Risks
- Packaging omissions could make the feature work in source but fail in
Docker, worktrees, or release assembly.
- Stack risk: merging out of order can expose incomplete layers;
mitigate by following the documented bottom-up merge policy.
- Parity risk: later edits to an intermediate branch can drift from
#9534; mitigate by re-running the empty top-of-stack diff before merge.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip coordinates AI-agent work through repeated heartbeat runs.
> - Adapter prompts combine a default heartbeat template with scoped
wake context.
> - Fresh heartbeats received the same execution contract from both
layers, wasting prompt tokens and obscuring which layer owns the
contract.
> - Resume deltas and template-less adapters do not share that
composition path, so removing the wake-payload copy unconditionally
would drop required guidance.
> - Empty comment batches also emitted instructions and metadata that
only matter when comments exist.
> - This pull request makes execution-contract inclusion explicit by
prompt path, preserves OpenClaw gateway behavior, and suppresses no-op
comment boilerplate.
> - The benefit is one contract per heartbeat path and roughly 300 fewer
prompt tokens on a fresh zero-comment wake.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
- Fixes#9221
- Refs #9200
- Refs #7634
## What Changed
- Stop emitting the execution-contract paragraph from fresh scoped wake
payloads because the default heartbeat template already contains the
full contract.
- Keep the contract in resume deltas, and add `includeExecutionContract`
for adapters that do not render the default heartbeat template.
- Opt `openclaw-gateway` into wake-payload contract rendering so
template-less gateway runs retain the guidance.
- Omit comment-batch acknowledgement/fetch guidance and empty `pending
comments` / `latest comment id` metadata when a fresh wake has no
pending comments.
- Add regression and acceptance coverage proving composed fresh prompts
contain `Execution contract` exactly once while resume and template-less
paths retain it.
Measured effect: the fresh zero-comment wake block drops from 1,840 to
855 characters (about 300 tokens saved per fresh heartbeat; about 220 on
comment wakes), and the composed fresh prompt contains `Execution
contract` once instead of twice.
## Verification

passed
- `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/codex-local-execute.test.ts` — 13

- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils typecheck` — passed
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck` —

## Risks
- Low risk: prompt text and adapter composition only; no database or API
migration.
- The main compatibility risk is a template-less adapter losing the
contract. The explicit option and OpenClaw gateway regression coverage
protect the known template-less path.
- External adapters that call `renderPaperclipWakePrompt` directly can
opt into `includeExecutionContract: true` when they do not render the
default template.

## Summary
Local OpenClaw gateways since v2026.5.x require
`MIN_CLIENT_PROTOCOL_VERSION = 4` (see
[openclaw/src/gateway/protocol/version.ts](https://github.com/NousResearch/openclaw/blob/main/src/gateway/protocol/version.ts)).
The Paperclip openclaw_gateway adapter at v0.3.1 still sends
`PROTOCOL_VERSION = 3`, which produces a WebSocket close (code 1002
\`protocol mismatch\`) before any auth challenge is issued.
## Symptom
Every \`openclaw_gateway\` agent run fails with:
- \`errorCode: openclaw_gateway_request_failed\`
- \`error: protocol mismatch\`
OpenClaw gateway journal:
\`\`\`
[ws] protocol mismatch conn=... remote=127.0.0.1 client=gateway-client
backend vpaperclip
[ws] closed before connect conn=... peer=...->127.0.0.1:18789 code=1002
reason=protocol mismatch
\`\`\`
## Fix
One-line bump in
[\`packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.ts:89\`](packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.ts#L89):
\`PROTOCOL_VERSION = 3\` → \`PROTOCOL_VERSION = 4\`. No protocol
semantics changed — the adapter's existing frames are compatible with
v4.
## Test plan
- [x] \`pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck\`
clean
- [x] \`pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway build\`
clean
- [x] Verified locally: openclaw_gateway agent connects + receives
challenge + completes auth handshake after the bump

Fixes#5997, fixes#4081, fixes#4723, fixes#6625, fixes#3923
Refs #6606 — this PR removes the rejected root `paperclip` field, but
#6606 also requires the protocol v3→v4 bump, which is out of scope here;
referencing rather than closing it.
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the control plane that wakes and coordinates agent
workers across company-scoped execution flows.
> - The `openclaw_gateway` adapter is part of that wake path, so its
outbound payload contract has to match the gateway's validated `agent`
schema.
> - `master` currently reintroduces a previously fixed regression by
sending a top-level `paperclip` property in `agentParams` (see #3923,
which reverts the original fix in #626).
> - The gateway rejects unknown root params, which means OpenClaw wakes
fail before the remote agent can start work.
> - The actual wake context already rides in the generated `message`, so
the extra root property is both redundant and harmful.
> - This pull request removes that leaked root property, adds a focused
regression test around param construction, and updates affected server
expectations/docs to the supported contract.
> - The benefit is that OpenClaw Gateway agents wake successfully again
without losing inline wake context.
## What Changed
- Removed the top-level `paperclip` field from OpenClaw Gateway
`agentParams` and extracted `buildAgentParams()` so the contract is easy
to test.
- Added a package-level regression test that proves
`payloadTemplate.paperclip` is stripped while explicit
`agentId`/`timeout` behavior stays intact.
- Updated server tests that inspect OpenClaw Gateway payloads to assert
wake data is delivered in `message` instead of a rejected root field.
- Updated the adapter configuration docs to state that wake context is
embedded in the generated message text, not sent as a top-level param.
### Rebase onto current `master` (conflict resolution)
This branch was opened against an older `master`; re-merging current
`master` required:
- Resolving conflicts in `execute.ts` — `master` hoisted
`configuredAgentId` and moved the agentId/timeout precedence inline;
this PR keeps the `buildAgentParams()` extraction that strips the
gateway-rejected root `paperclip`.
- Updating tests `master` added **after** this branch's base that assert
the old root-`paperclip` contract. These suites use the OpenClaw gateway
adapter purely as a delivery harness (`adapterType: "openclaw_gateway"`
+ a mock gateway) and observe wake content via the gateway payload, so
dropping the root field requires them to read wake context from
`message` instead:
- `server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts`
- `server/src/__tests__/low-trust-red-team-routes.test.ts` (redaction
guarantees preserved — sanitized body + `expectNoCanary` on the raw
canary)
- Replaced brittle JSON-substring assertions (flagged by Greptile) with
a shared `parseWakePayloadFromMessage()` helper + `toMatchObject`,
robust to serialization/key-order changes.
The strict contract is confirmed upstream: OpenClaw's
`AgentParamsSchema` is `Type.Object(..., { additionalProperties: false
})` with no `paperclip` field, so a root `paperclip` is rejected
(`invalid agent params: at root: unexpected property 'paperclip'`).
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck` —
clean
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` — clean
- `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server
server/src/__tests__/openclaw-gateway-adapter.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/low-trust-red-team-routes.test.ts` — 26 passed (7 +
11 + 8)
- `packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.test.ts` — 6
passed (run via a local temp vitest config because the root
`vitest.config.ts` does not include this package)
## Risks
- Low risk: this narrows the outbound payload to the gateway-supported
contract and keeps wake context in the already-supported `message`
channel.
- Any downstream consumer that incorrectly depended on a top-level
`paperclip` field from the gateway mock payloads would need to follow
the supported `message` contract instead.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - The `openclaw_gateway` adapter is how operators wire Paperclip
agents to an OpenClaw gateway over WebSocket
> - The adapter UI previously only exposed a handful of config fields in
edit mode; many timeout / auth / session-routing knobs were unreachable
through the form
> - The serializer also forgot to inject the configured `authToken` into
the `x-openclaw-token` header, and the server-side execute path lacked
retries on transient gateway errors and an `OPENCLAW_TOKEN` env fallback
> - This pull request exposes the full set of config fields in both
create and edit modes, fixes the serializer, hardens the server-side
execute path, and pins the existing default request timeouts (120s /
120000ms) — see the dedicated commit and the new unit tests
> - The benefit is operators can configure and reconfigure an
`openclaw_gateway` agent end-to-end through the UI, with no silent
change to the defaults documented in the adapter README and
`doc/ONBOARDING_AND_TEST_PLAN.md`
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Closes#414Closes#1901Closes#2309
## What Changed
- **UI**: Removed the `!isCreate` guard so all `openclaw_gateway` config
fields are visible in both create and edit modes (`authToken`,
`agentId`, `sessionKeyStrategy`, `sessionKey`, `timeoutSec`,
`waitTimeoutMs`, `disableDeviceAuth`, `autoPairOnFirstConnect`, `role`,
`scopes`, `paperclipApiUrl`, `headersJson`, `payloadTemplate`,
`runtimeServices`).
- **Serialization**
(`packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/ui/build-config.ts`): inject
`authToken` into headers as `x-openclaw-token`; apply safe defaults on
create (`timeoutSec=120`, `waitTimeoutMs=120000`,
`sessionKeyStrategy="issue"`, `role="operator"`,
`scopes=["operator.admin"]`).
- **Backend**
(`packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/server/execute.ts`): add
`OPENCLAW_TOKEN` env-var fallback for `authToken`, retry logic (max 2
retries with backoff for transient gateway errors), session-key prefix
`agent:{agentId}:{sessionId}` when `agentId` is configured.
- **Defaults restoration** (dedicated commit): an earlier revision of
this PR lowered the default request timeouts to `60` / `30000`. The
current branch restores the historical `timeoutSec=120` /
`waitTimeoutMs=120000` defaults that match the values documented in
`packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/index.ts`,
`src/server/execute.ts` on master, and the worked example in
`doc/ONBOARDING_AND_TEST_PLAN.md`.
- **Tests** (new):
`packages/adapters/openclaw-gateway/src/ui/build-config.test.ts` pins
the documented timeout and identity defaults so the silent-halve
regression cannot recur.
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-openclaw-gateway typecheck`
- `pnpm typecheck` (root)
- Manual: create a new `openclaw_gateway` agent — all fields visible,
defaults populate as documented.
- Manual: edit an existing `openclaw_gateway` agent — every field
round-trips correctly and saves.
- Manual: unset `authToken` in the form and set `OPENCLAW_TOKEN` env var
— adapter picks up the env-var fallback.
- Manual: simulate a transient gateway error — execute retries up to 2
times with backoff before failing.
## Risks
- Low risk. Surface area is one adapter, behind explicit operator
configuration. The defaults change in this PR is a restoration of values
that already exist on master and in the adapter docs, so no production
agent sees a behavioral shift relative to the prior release. Field
exposure in edit mode is purely additive — existing values are preserved
on save.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents across isolated execution
workspaces; the local cwd is the only persistence boundary between runs.
> - Workspace lifecycle (worktree_prepare → execute →
workspace_finalize) and the wake/accept flow are what guarantee that
dependent issues see a consistent worktree.
> - PAPA-380 / PAPA-431 / PAPA-432 / PAPA-440 surfaced three holes in
that contract: silent env reuse across assignees, dependent wakes firing
before finalize, and `issue.interaction.accept` advancing before
finalize landed.
> - PAPA-441 / PAPA-442 then needed to document the "no remote git"
contract and prevent future adapter/runtime code from quietly
reintroducing `git push` as a backdoor sync.
> - This pull request lands those server fixes, the static
`check-no-git-push` enforcement, the AUTHORING.md cross-link, and the
Cody-review follow-ups on the PAPA-430 thread.
> - The benefit is that finalize is a real barrier — board accepts,
dependent wakes, and operator-set env all respect it — and adapter code
can't bypass it via raw `git push`.
## What Changed
- **server (PAPA-380, PAPA-431):** `execution-workspace-policy` refuses
silent env reuse when the assignee's resolved env disagrees with the
workspace it would inherit. The inheritance protection is now scoped to
the actual inheritance signal — explicit issue-level `environmentId` is
honored even when the agent's default env is `null`.
- **server (PAPA-432):** `heartbeat.ts` gates dependent wakes on
`listUnfinalizedExecutionWorkspaceIds`, and writes a
`workspace_finalize` row on the succeeded path. Write failures now
surface instead of being swallowed so dependents aren't silently
stranded behind a missing row.
- **server (PAPA-440):** `issue-thread-interactions.acceptInteraction`
adds a workspace_finalize precondition for `request_confirmation` (not
`suggest_tasks`). Accept returns 409 if finalize hasn't succeeded for
the latest workspace operation.
- **ci (PAPA-442):** new `scripts/check-no-git-push.mjs` static check
scans `packages/adapters/`, `packages/adapter-utils/`, `server/src/`,
and `cli/src/` for any `git push` invocation (string or args-array).
Wired into the `policy` PR job and `test:release-registry`. Operators
can opt in per-call with `// paperclip:allow-git-push: <reason>`.
Release scripts are out of scope by design.
- **docs (PAPA-441):** `AUTHORING.md` documents the no-remote-git
contract and cross-links the static check so adapter authors learn the
rule and the enforcement together.
- **review follow-up (PAPA-430, Cody):** three fixes — env resolver bug,
accept-gate scope (request_confirmation only), and finalize record write
on the succeeded path.
## Verification
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/execution-workspace-policy.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/issue-thread-interactions-service.test.ts` → 33/33
pass
- `node scripts/check-no-git-push.test.mjs` → check covers string form,
args-array form, comment exclusions, and per-line allow-comment.
- Manual: server compiles; the policy job runs the check in <1s before
heavier jobs.
## Risks
- **Behavioral shift in accept:** boards accepting
`request_confirmation` while finalize is in-flight now get 409s. This is
intentional — they can retry — but it changes timing on a hot path.
`suggest_tasks` is unaffected.
- **Workspace policy:** the env-reuse refusal is a new error path.
Issues that previously silently reused an env from a different-assignee
workspace will now fail-loud; the resolver still honors explicit
issue-level `executionWorkspaceSettings.environmentId`.
- **CI rule:** any future legitimate `git push` in scoped dirs must be
marked with the allow-comment, which is the intended ergonomic.

> - This pull request adds an issue work-mode contract and board UI
affordances for standard vs planning mode.
> - The benefit is that planning-mode issues can be created, displayed,
discussed, and carried through agent heartbeat context without losing
the normal issue workflow.
## What Changed
- Added `standard` / `planning` issue work-mode contracts across DB,
shared validators/types, server issue flows, plugin protocol, and
adapter heartbeat payloads.
- Added an idempotent `0081_optimal_dormammu` migration for
`issues.work_mode`, ordered after current `public-gh/master` migrations.
- Updated heartbeat/context summaries and issue-thread interaction
behavior so planning work mode is preserved when creating suggested
follow-up issues.
- Added UI support for planning-mode issue creation, issue rows, detail
composer styling, and composer work-mode toggles.
- Added focused server/shared/UI tests plus a Playwright visual
verification spec for planning-mode surfaces.
- Rebased the branch onto current `public-gh/master` and added durable
planning-mode screenshots under `doc/assets/pap-3368/`.

## Risks
- Medium migration risk: this adds a non-null issue column. The
migration uses `ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` so installations that applied
an older branch-local migration number can still apply the final
numbered migration safely.
- Medium contract risk: issue payloads, plugin payloads, and adapter
heartbeat payloads now include work mode; compatibility is handled by
defaulting missing values to `standard`.
- UI risk is moderate because composer controls changed; focused
component tests and visual e2e coverage exercise standard vs planning
display and toggle behavior.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies.
> - Operators supervise that work through issues, comments, approvals,
and the board UI.
> - Some agent proposals need structured board/user decisions, not
hidden markdown conventions or heavyweight governed approvals.
> - Issue-thread interactions already provide a natural thread-native
surface for proposed tasks and questions.
> - This pull request extends that surface with request confirmations,
richer interaction cards, and agent/plugin/MCP helpers.
> - The benefit is that plan approvals and yes/no decisions become
explicit, auditable, and resumable without losing the single-issue
workflow.
## What Changed
- Added persisted issue-thread interactions for suggested tasks,
structured questions, and request confirmations.
- Added board UI cards for interaction review, selection, question
answers, and accept/reject confirmation flows.
- Added MCP and plugin SDK helpers for creating interaction cards from
agents/plugins.
- Updated agent wake instructions, onboarding assets, Paperclip skill
docs, and public docs to prefer structured confirmations for
issue-scoped decisions.
- Rebased the branch onto `public-gh/master` and renumbered branch
migrations to `0063` and `0064`; the idempotency migration uses `ADD
COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` for old branch users.
## Verification
- `git diff --check public-gh/master..HEAD`
- `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts
packages/mcp-server/src/tools.test.ts

server/src/__tests__/issue-thread-interactions-service.test.ts
server/src/services/issue-thread-interactions.test.ts` -> 9 files / 79
tests passed
- `pnpm -r typecheck` -> passed, including `packages/db` migration
numbering check
## Risks
- Medium: this adds a new issue-thread interaction model across
db/shared/server/ui/plugin surfaces.
- Migration risk is reduced by placing this branch after current master
migrations (`0063`, `0064`) and making the idempotency column add
idempotent for users who applied the old branch numbering.
- UI interaction behavior is covered by component tests, but this PR
does not include browser screenshots.

## Model Used

context window are not exposed in this Paperclip run; tool use and local
shell/code execution were enabled.

## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies.
> - Heartbeat runs are the control-plane record of each agent execution
window.
> - Long-running local agents can exhaust context or stop while still
holding useful next-step state.
> - Operators need that stop reason, next action, and continuation path
to be durable and visible.
> - This pull request adds run liveness metadata, continuation
summaries, and UI surfaces for issue run ledgers.
> - The benefit is that interrupted or long-running work can resume with
clearer context instead of losing the agent's last useful handoff.
## What Changed
- Added heartbeat-run liveness fields, continuation attempt tracking,
and an idempotent `0058` migration.
- Added server services and tests for run liveness, continuation
summaries, stop metadata, and activity backfill.
- Wired local and HTTP adapters to surface continuation/liveness context
through shared adapter utilities.
- Added shared constants, validators, and heartbeat types for liveness
continuation state.
- Added issue-detail UI surfaces for continuation handoffs and the run
ledger, with component tests.
- Updated agent runtime docs, heartbeat protocol docs, prompt guidance,
onboarding assets, and skills instructions to explain continuation
behavior.
- Addressed Greptile feedback by scoping document evidence by run,
excluding system continuation-summary documents from liveness evidence,
importing shared liveness types, surfacing hidden ledger run counts,
documenting bounded retry behavior, and moving run-ledger liveness
backfill off the request path.

service|treats a plan document update"`
- Remote PR checks on head `e53b1a1d`: `verify`, `e2e`, `policy`, and
Snyk all passed.
- Confirmed `public-gh/master` is an ancestor of this branch after
fetching `public-gh master`.
- Confirmed `pnpm-lock.yaml` is not included in the branch diff.
- Confirmed migration `0058_wealthy_starbolt.sql` is ordered after
`0057` and uses `IF NOT EXISTS` guards for repeat application.
- Greptile inline review threads are resolved.
## Risks
- Medium risk: this touches heartbeat execution, liveness recovery,
activity rendering, issue routes, shared contracts, docs, and UI.
- Migration risk is mitigated by additive columns/indexes and idempotent
guards.
- Run-ledger liveness backfill is now asynchronous, so the first ledger
response can briefly show historical missing liveness until the
background backfill completes.
- UI screenshot coverage is not included in this packaging pass;
validation is currently through focused component tests.

The openclaw_gateway adapter hardcodes the Paperclip API key path to
~/.openclaw/workspace/paperclip-claimed-api-key.json in buildWakeText().
In multi-agent OpenClaw deployments, each agent has its own workspace
with its own key file. The hardcoded path forces all agents to share
one key, breaking agent identity isolation.
Add a claimedApiKeyPath field to the adapter config (with UI input)
that allows operators to set a per-agent path. Falls back to the
current default when unset — zero behavior change for existing
deployments.
Fixes#930
The OpenClaw Gateway's agent method has strict parameter validation
that rejects unknown properties. The paperclip property was being
sent at the root level of agentParams, causing validation failures
with error: "invalid agent params: at root: unexpected property 'paperclip'"
The paperclip metadata is already included in the message field
via wakeText, so removing the separate paperclip property resolves
the validation error while preserving the necessary information.

Include the full Paperclip API workflow (checkout, fetch, update) and
endpoint bans in the wake text sent to OpenClaw agents, preventing
them from guessing non-existent endpoints. Applied to both openclaw
and openclaw_gateway adapters.
